Jalaluddin: Ismail's PM candidacy shows Umno is united

The Umno supreme council's unanimous decision to nominate Prime Minister and party vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob as the party's candidate for the next prime minister showed that the party was united, said council member Jalaluddin Alias.

Jalaluddin (above) said the party's decision had put to rest claims that Umno was becoming more fragmented or that the party had not learned its lessons from the last general election.

"By announcing that the Umno vice-president (is our choice for) prime minister, it is sending the message that Umno is very united and prepared to face the next general election.

"It also shows that the party 'top five' - the president, deputy president and the three vice-presidents - are magnanimous people (who will do anything that) benefits the people," he wrote on his Facebook page.

Ismail Sabri's candidacy, said the veteran politician, would bring stability to the country, and he hoped voters would have the confidence in Umno and BN to return to power.

Another Umno supreme council member, Arma Azha Abu Hanifah, told Umno-online that the supreme council meeting last night had set the party's direction for the next general election.

He said this decision ought to be accepted by the party grassroots in order to unite the party.

"This is not the time for a split or attempts to scuttle the ship from within... Our enemy is Pakatan Harapan and Perikatan Nasional, not among ourselves.

"It is time for us to work as a team and approach the voters, especially the young and first-time voters. That is the true test for the next election," he said.

Last night, the Umno supreme council also decided that it will amend its constitution to delay internal leadership elections, support efforts to pass laws restricting MPs from switching parties and resolved that the government's confidence-and-supply agreement with Harapan should end on July 31. - Mkini
