MACC nabs 8 over RM2.3b projects, seizes cars, bags, gold bars

MACC has arrested eight individuals including top executives of a company for alleged corruption involving projects worth RM2.3 billion for a government-linked company (GLC).

According to a MACC spokesperson, the anti-graft agency detained the suspects at the MACC Sarawak office and MACC headquarters in Putrajaya between 1.30pm yesterday and the wee hours of this morning (April 8).

Those arrested include the company's owner, its chief executive officer, chief operations officer, executives, and directors. They are aged between 35 and 45.

Following the arrests, investigators also seized a number of luxury items, including 10 luxury cars, gold bars, and jewellery, 15 luxury watches, 13 handbags, and RM27,000 in cash.

The commission also froze 12 bank accounts belonging to the company and the individuals concerned.

"MACC has applied for remand orders against the suspects at the Putrajaya and Kuching Magistrate Courts today. In Putrajaya, the court allowed a four-day remand against two of the suspects and five days for another four suspects.

"While in Kuching, two suspects were given remand orders of five days and two days, respectively," the spokesperson said.

Sources said the suspects were allegedly involved in bribery involving several projects of a GLC that were carried out between 2017 and 2021.

MACC had been tight-lipped on the nature of the projects and the GLC that was responsible for them.

Meanwhile, MACC investigations senior director Hishamuddin Hashim when contacted confirmed the case and said it is being investigated under Section 17 of the MACC Act 2009. - Mkini
