Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said he would abide by the Umno supreme council's decision that the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Transformation and Political Stability inked between the federal government and Pakatan Harapan must expire on July 31.
As Umno vice-president, Ismail Sabri said he is subject to the decision made by the council.
"It was decided yesterday that it (the MOU) is only until July 31 and shall not be extended.
"If there are any changes, the supreme council will discuss (the matter) again," he told reporters in Putrajaya, according to Bernama.
The MOU is a confidence-and-supply agreement between Ismail Sabri's government and Pakatan Harapan.
The agreement saw Ismail Sabri promising several reforms, such as laws restricting MPs from switching parties.
In exchange, Harapan promised that its MPs will not participate in any confidence votes against Ismail Sabri nor vote down any of his finance bills.
According to Clause 2.1 of the MOU, the deal was to last until the dissolution of Parliament. Clause 3.1 of the MOU states that Ismail Sabri will not dissolve Parliament before July 31.
The MOU was inked in September last year. The month prior saw Umno split into two major camps - one siding with party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and the other siding Ismail Sabri - after Muhyiddin Yassin was ousted as prime minister.
Eventually, both camps compromised and agreed to nominate Ismail Sabri as the country's ninth prime minister. - Mkini
