No way, say DAP, Umno on Norhizam’s MP dream

Norhizam Hassan Baktee claims that he is being courted by several parties.

PETALING JAYA: DAP and Umno have shut the door on the prospects of controversial former assemblyman Norhizam Hassan Baktee contesting in the next general election (GE15) under their respective banners.

Melaka DAP chief Damien Yeo told FMT the party does not “want him back”, as the sting of Norhizam’s past actions was still felt by its grassroots.

“The grassroots felt betrayed by his actions and he has angered the people,” said Yeo, who described Norhizam as a man without principles and who only cared about himself.

Norhizam, who was with Umno before switching to DAP in 2006, was one of the four assemblymen who caused the fall of the Sulaiman Md Ali government last October, leading to fresh state assembly elections.

Barisan Nasional won the elections by a landslide, taking 21 of the 28 seats.

Yeo said that admitting Norhizam into DAP once again would not be a popular move.

“The 2021 Melaka state elections speaks for itself, and the people have rejected him,” he said, recounting that Norhizam had failed to defend the Pengkalan Batu seat as an independent candidate, losing it to Barisan Nasional’s (BN) Kalsom Nordin.

On Sunday, Norhizam, who is now without a party, declared his intentions of becoming an MP in GE15. He said he is ready to be a DAP or Umno member again, and claimed he was being courted by several parties.

Melaka Umno chief Ab Rauf Yusoh said his party would not want Norhizam to run under its ticket either, but could consider letting him rejoin as a member.

“If he wants to return (to Umno) without conditions, then we can consider. However, if the condition is for him to be made an Umno candidate, then I don’t think so.

“We’ve had bad experiences (with him), so once bitten twice shy,” he said.

Rauf said Umno and BN had enough candidates who were better than Norhizam, adding that his disloyalty to any party was problematic. - FMT
