SIBU: Sarawak’s oldest mosque, the Al-Qadim Mosque here, is expected to be reopened for Tarawih prayers on the last 10 days of Ramadan.
The historic mosque, which is 161 years old, can accommodate 500 worshippers. It was closed five years ago for restoration works.
State deputy education minister Annuar Rapaee said the mosque was built by an Indonesian cleric who came to Sibu to preach to the Muslim community in Kampung Nyabor in 1861.
Repairs and restoration of the original design of the mosque cost about RM2.2 million, he said.
Annuar, who is Nangka assemblyman, said Muslims can perform prayers in comfort because the mosque is now fully air-conditioned.
He said he would hold discussions with the relevant parties to determine the actual date the mosque will be fully opened. - FMT
