PETALING JAYA: Sexual assault cases are said to occur daily but some victims refuse to file police reports for fear of being made fun of or blamed, says a crime analyst.
Kamal Affandi Hashim, a member of the Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation, said the way certain segments of the community took cases of groping and molest lightly made this worse, as perpetrators continued to commit these immoral acts.
“The victims don’t want to report to the police because they assume the matter is minor and they fear being made fun of. Because in the community, there are those who blame the victims, whether in terms of their dressing, rather than focus on the issue itself.
“The community has to take some responsibility for this. They don’t realise that failing to focus on the real issue at hand, and victim-blaming, will only drive the number of these cases further,” he told FMT.
This comes after a sexual assault case occurred in the parking lot of Tamarind Square in Cyberjaya on April 5. The 20-year-old suspect was arrested the next day.
Police had also revealed that the suspect had sexually assaulted five other women in Tamarind Square in December last year, and two of the victims did not lodge reports.
Kamal said the management of Tamarind Square should not take all the blame for failing to design the building’s layout in a way that could avoid criminal acts, adding that there was no requirement for such an evaluation in designing a building.
Meanwhile, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia law lecturer Zizi Azlinda Mohd Yusof said efforts to establish a community that was more in touch with sexual harassment cases needed to start from home.
She told FMT that parents cannot escape from the responsibility of educating their children on this, especially teaching their sons how to respect women. - FMT
