Terengganu probes ‘sexily-dressed’ singer at Arabian Dangdut event

 

A video clip featuring a singer at an “Arabian Dangdut” event in Terengganu has prompted an investigation by police and religious officials.

KUALA TERENGGANU: State religious officials and the police are to investigate an “Arabian Dangdut Night” at a hotel featuring a “sexily-dressed” singer believed to be a man who dressed as a woman.

A 25-second video of the performance has been widely shared and drew criticisms. The event took place on March 25, a week before Muslims welcomed Ramadan.

State executive councillor Mohd Nor Hamzah said an investigation would be conducted into a violation of the state guidelines on entertainment, cultural performances, tourism and sports.

“Police have received a report on the incident, and the state government will not interfere in the investigation,” he said after visiting Tanjung Vista Hotel here.

Mohd Nor said the state government was sensitive about such matters which offended Muslims, and he hoped the incident would not recur.

Tanjung Vista Hotel general manager Lily Julia Hassan Tan apologised on behalf of the hotel for the incident and stressed that the event was not organised by the hotel.

“We received a booking from a person who wanted to hold a dinner for 120 people. Reservations were made for food and karaoke, and there was no mention of the kind of dance that went viral in the video,” she added. - FMT
