KUALA LUMPUR: The Dewan Rakyat has adopted a motion to form a parliamentary select committee to draft an anti-hopping bill.
The 11-member select committee will be chaired by law minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.
The other members are Azalina Othman Said (BN-Pengerang), Nazri Aziz (BN-Padang Rengas), Wilfred Madius Tangau (Upko-Tuaran), Lukanisman Awang Sauni (GPS-Sibuti), Hanipa Maidin (PH-Sepang), Gobind Singh Deo (PH-Puchong), Saifuddin Nasution Ismail (PH-Kulim Bandar Baharu), Darell Leiking (Warisan-Penampang), home minister Hamzah Zainudin and energy and natural resources minister Takiyuddin Hassan
In a statement released after the special Dewan Rakyat sitting today, Wan Junaidi said the select committee will be given the freedom to invite relevant stakeholders to attend its meetings from time to time.
They will include other MPs, legal and constitutional experts, and civil society groups.
The committee will look into the recommendations made by MPs during the debate today on a proposed constitutional amendment to provide power to create anti-hopping legislation.
Wan Junaidi, winding up the debate, said the committee will look into a specific definition on party hopping, repealing Article 48 (6) of the Federal Constitution, making any other constitutional amendments and drafting the anti-hopping law itself.
Earlier today, Pakatan Harapan said the anti-hopping bill would be tabled for debate at a special Dewan Rakyat sitting before the end of May. - FMT
