YOURSAY | A promise is a promise – pass the anti-hopping bill

YOURSAY | ‘We want the anti-hopping law passed even with its imperfections.’

Anti-hopping law still on the cards, another special sitting planned

Cabinet has 'political frogs', not easy to pass anti-hopping bill – Shahrir

COMMENT | Why impose imperfect anti-hopping law on states?

OrangePanther1466: “…It is not easy for the government to table and pass the anti-party hopping bill as the cabinet also consists of ‘political frogs,” said Umno veteran Shahrir Samad.

All I can say is Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Shahrir are both putting on a good show. The absence of any anti-party hopping laws before the 15th general election will only benefit Umno and BN.

Let's be frank - the 15th general elections will see Umno and BN getting the most seats. The only question is whether it would be enough for them to form a majority government on their own.

A shortfall is likely and this is where they will look for "frogs" to cross over so that they can form a simple majority to rule.

For the opposition, especially Pakatan Harapan, an anti-hopping law is crucial to prevent their newly-elected MPs from jumping to Umno and BN.

Darmakochi: Shahrir, you said it well. Let's see whether the frogs bribed with so many lucrative posts including ministership will uphold the basic principles of democracy, setting aside their inborn personal greed to save our nation.

Maybe we can add another category of nations – ‘frog world nation’ instead of ‘third world nation’.

Kilimanjaro: Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob will be in serious breach of trust if he doesn't take the bill to Parliament for a vote.

He cannot hide behind the cabinet's decision. Take it to the Dewan Rakyat and let the people see who are those who object to the bill.

Ferdtan: We are tired of the ‘frogs’. We just want the anti-hopping law passed even with its imperfections.

If you wait for the perfect law, which will never happen for any law, this idea of eradicating party hopping would be lost (mark my words) forever.

Procrastination to get a better draft law was often used to kill off the idea of introducing a new law.

It may be ideal if this can be further improved as suggested by political commentator Wong Chin Huat; but by all means, passed it before the 15th general elections.

Amendments can be made later. One step at a time or never!

Semi Value: Most ministers in the cabinet are the ones who jumped from one party to another party. Did you expect them to approve the bill?

International Trade and Industry Minister Azmin Ali Azmin Ali, Home Minister Hamzah Zainuddin, Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin Zuraidah and Women, Family and Community Development Minister Rina Harun are all frogs.

Open Mind: The Sheraton Move could not have happened without the defection of 11 PKR MPs as they would be sacked. Sabah will still be run by Warisan as its state assemblypersons cannot hop to the opposition.

Though not perfect, the anti-hopping law can still deter party hopping.

WhiteMoose0037: How on earth can you expect all the frogs from Bersatu to vote in favour of the anti-hopping laws?

It is time Ismail Sabri make his stand instead of talking about language and other nonsensical issues, making a fool of himself. Umno should come on strong and confront the prime minister to toe the party line.

Anonymous_47029368: The proposed anti-hopping law must first remove the provision that an MP would lose his seat when expelled from his party.

This provision can easily be abused by a corrupt political leader to remove MPs who are opposed to him.

Furthermore, a MP is elected by the people and thus cannot be just removed by a political party or its leader. Don't cover a mistake with a bigger mistake.

Hmmmmmmmm: The only thing I agree immediately is that parties which leave coalitions should also be subject to the same punishments as MPs who leave their parties.

By-elections should be mandatory. The voters should have another chance to decide if they agree with the frogging MP or party.

Frank: First, it was (and still today) the attempted bailout of Sapura Energy Berhad.

Then, it is the so-called Amanat Lebuhraya Rakyat Bhd (ALR Bhd) offered to buy concessions for the Shah Alam Expressway (Kesas), Western Kuala Lumpur Traffic Dispersal System (Sprint Highway), Damansara-Puchong Expressway (LDP), and Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel (Smart).

And now this. In each of these cases, Malaysians are told lies after lies. When is enough is enough?

Appum: They just do not have the political will to carry out such changes for the good.

Just like the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (ICPMC) case, they do not want to have good governance so that they can manipulate every circumstance which will politically benefit their stay in power or abuse of power.

Are we surprised by such charades? - Mkini
