5-point GPS manifesto pledges to put ‘Sarawak First’

PETALING JAYA: Gabungan Parti Sarawak has launched a five-point manifesto for the general election that focuses on a “Sarawak First” direction.

In the manifesto, GPS has vowed to ensure the state’s political stability and strength by defending Sarawak’s rights in line with the provisions of the Malaysia Agreement 1963, the Inter-Governmental Committee report, and the state and federal constitutions.

The coalition also pledged to expedite and enhance the development of basic infrastructure and public facilities to ease the movement of the people and drive the development process.

Major roads would be developed, such as the Pan Borneo Highway, and rural and village roads connected to health, education and commercial service centres.

High quality ports and airports would also be developed to drive international trade.

Other pledges included expanding the coverage and quality of water and electricity supply, and providing better telecommunications and internet services.

The manifesto said GPS also aims to develop quality human capital through technical and vocational education, building and upgrading dilapidated schools, and providing avenues for Sarawak students to continue their higher education.

The coalition also emphasised making Sarawak a global supply chain hub for the development of the digital economy, hydrogen economy and green technology.

GPS chairman Abang Johari Openg, speaking at the launch of the manifesto, said the coalition would strengthen Sarawak’s financial future by establishing a Sarawak sovereign wealth fund.

Abang Johari highlighted GPS’ record in the four years since it was formed, and said the Sarawak government’s revenue had doubled.

“We used to receive only around RM4 billion to RM5 billion. The highest was RM6 billion. However, within four years we had revenue of more than RM10 billion,” he said.

He took a swipe at Pakatan Harapan, saying that the opposition coalition had made various promises to the people of Sarawak which were not fulfilled.

“Many development projects were cancelled without any second thoughts about the fate of our people. This must be taken as a lesson so that history does not repeat itself,” he said. - FMT
