MMA head Muruga now Commonwealth medical group chief

Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) president Dr Muruga Raj Rajathurai has been elected by the council of the Commonwealth Medical Association (CMA) as its new president.

It has been 21 years since a Malaysian doctor was elected as CMA president when Dr P Krishnan served in that position from 2001-2004.

“I look forward to working with the heads of the medical associations from the Commonwealth nations on the many global issues on health we are facing today

“Access to healthcare, the global increase in cases of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), mental health, ageing populations, and climate change are some of the issues I will be focusing on during my term as CMA president.

“CMA has a wide network of 54 medical associations from the 54 commonwealth nations. I look forward to meeting regularly with the heads of the national medical associations on addressing these global health issues and for knowledge sharing,” he said.

Muruga (above, right) was giving an acceptance speech at the CMA’s 26th Triennial Conference and Council Meeting in Kuala Lumpur.

His two-year term as president of the CMA began yesterday. Two other MMA executive council members were elected into leadership positions with the CMA.

MMA’s honourary general secretary Dr Thirunavukarasu Rajoo was elected CMA regional vice president for South East Asian countries.

MMA's Immediate past president Dr Koh Kar Chai was elected CMA treasurer.

Outgoing CMA president and current World Medical Association (WMA) president Dr Osahon Enabulele from Nigeria (above, left) handed over CMA’s top leadership role to Muruga at a ceremony held yesterday evening.

The CMA was established in 1952. Its objective is to assist and strengthen the capacities of national medical associations of countries within the Commonwealth to improve the health, well-being, and human rights of their countries and communities. - Mkini
