PUTRAJAYA: Three Malaysians who were trapped by the armed conflict in Khartoum, Sudan, have arrived safely at a naval base in Saudi Arabia and are scheduled to fly back to Malaysia on Sunday.

They were evacuated from Sudan on board a Saudi Arabian naval vessel which docked in Jeddah at 12.50am Malaysian time, foreign minister Zambry Abdul Kadir said. Malaysian consular officials met them on arrival and took them to the accommodation arranged by the Saudi government.

Zambry said Wisma Putra, the Sudan special operations team, the Malaysian embassies in Sudan and Riyadh, and the Saudi government were involved in the evacuation effort.

He advised Malaysians with knowledge of fellow countrymen in Sudan to get in touch with the foreign ministry, so they may assist in the search.

The three Malaysians had not been registered with the Malaysian embassy in Khartoum.

At least 550 people in Sudan have died and more than 5,000 have been injured in the fighting between the army and a paramilitary force since April 15. - FMT
