PETALING JAYA: Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin says it is “strange” to hear an Umno leader call upon party members to support DAP, their rivals-turned-allies in the unity government.
Muhyiddin, who was previously an Umno member for 40 years, said this was the first time he has heard Umno members being urged by party leaders to vote for DAP.
“This is a strange matter, so it depends on whether they (Umno members) will uphold their party’s principles.
“It’s an awkward instruction,” he told reporters at the Pagoh constituency’s Aidilfitri celebration today.
Muhyiddin was asked to comment on Umno Supreme Council member Ahmad Maslan calling on party members to look at DAP candidates in the upcoming state elections as representing the unity government rather than the party itself.
Ahmad was reminding Umno members to obey party orders and set aside their personal differences for the sake of stability.
Former foes Umno and DAP are part of the unity government, which comprises Pakatan Harapan (PH), Barisan Nasional (BN), Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) and Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS). The government is also supported by Warisan, Muda, Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM) and independents.
Earlier today, DAP national publicity secretary Teo Nie Ching also called upon party members to support Umno candidates in the upcoming state polls.
She said that they should set aside any past differences so that parties in the unity government could win big and strengthen the state and federal administrations.
She gave an assurance that DAP would continue to reach out to voters of all races and backgrounds. - FMT
