PAS should remain cautious about accepting any purported offer to join Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's coalition government, the party's Sarawak chapter said.
Sarawak PAS commissioner Jofri Jaraiee reportedly warned that such offers could be a "tactic to confuse voters", especially with the looming elections in six states.
Jofri’s (above) comments came after party president Abdul Hadi Awang claimed to have been “repeatedly approached by certain people” to join the government.
“We are not sure about the true intentions of these ‘certain people’. Maybe, they want to split PAS from Perikatan Nasional (PN),” he was reported as saying by FMT.
Having said that, Jofri stressed that any “invite” must be extended to Bersatu as well, which essentially means PN as a whole, not just PAS.
While still having reservations about the alleged offer, he said it should not be rejected just yet.
“Maybe, we can consider it after the state elections.
"PAS needs to discuss the offer to join the coalition government with its component partners in PN before accepting it," Jofri added.
Yesterday, Hadi alleged that “certain people” had been wanting to meet him about an offer to join the government.
However, he said the offer would not be advantageous to PAS.
Hadi asserted that PAS should be given a dominant role as it had the most number of parliamentary seats, of all parties.
“PAS has 43 seats (and all its MPs are Malay-Muslims). PKR only has 30, with nine MPs being non-Malays and only 19 being Muslims.
“On the other hand, of the DAP’s 40 seats, 37 of the MPs are non-Malays.
“They want to invite PAS, but PAS would be taking a backseat,” he was quoted as saying by FMT at a press conference at World Trade Centre, Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
On May 17, Hadi was reported as saying that PAS would be open to working with any of its former foes as long as they were willing to change.
However, the Marang MP stressed that he would not hesitate to cut ties if the cooperation went against its principles and the path of Islam.
PAS, had in the past, worked with PKR and DAP to form Barisan Alternatif in 1999 until 2001, and Pakatan Rakyat (PR) from 2008 to 2015.
The aforementioned parties were members of the three-party opposition PR before the bloc fell apart in 2015. - Mkini
