Cabinet yet to discuss 20pct EPF contribution hike proposal - Anwar

The cabinet has yet to discuss the proposal to raise the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) contribution rate from employers to 20 percent, said Anwar Ibrahim.

The prime minister said although the proposal has been submitted to the government, a decision has yet to be made.

"(We have) not even discussed it yet," he said briefly to the media after inaugurating the Menara KWSP Kwasa Damansara in Sungai Buloh today.

On May 1, Anwar said the calls for employers to contribute 20 percent towards the EPF will be discussed once it is brought to the cabinet.

Currently, employees contribute 11 percent of their monthly pay to the EPF, and employers match that amount with a further 12 percent or 13 percent, depending on the statutory rate.

The increased contribution rate was one of 12 proposals the Malaysian International Trade Union Network Council (UNI-MLC) made to the government.

Also submitted is a review of the mandatory retirement age limit.

Meanwhile, Anwar described the Menara KWSP Kwasa Damansara as a landmark of integrity and responsible service.

"If we witness this new development area with greenery, then it gives an impression of sustainability awareness.

“Not only the progress of rapid growth but also taking into account that it benefits the people.

"This also includes solving national problems, good management and governance (which) can make progress faster but (it) must be managed with integrity management and (it should) eliminate all forms of leakage and corruption," he said. - Mkini
