Former Padang Serai MP N Gobalakrishnan has gone to the Court of Appeal to quash a ruling for him to pay RM150,000 in damages to a former Sungai Siput PKR branch treasurer and her husband.
His counsel Muhamad Samsul Nizam Sohhimi confirmed with Malaysiakini this afternoon about the filing of the notice of appeal against a lower court verdict in a defamation suit against the former lawmaker by R Indrani and S Selvakumar.
According to a copy of the notice of appeal filed on March 15, Gobalakrishnan is appealing against the decision made by the High Court in Kuala Lumpur.
On Feb 23, judicial commissioner Raja Ahmad Mohzanuddin Shah Raja Mohzan ordered Gobalakrishnan to pay RM150,000 to Indrani and Selvakumar, who is also a pilot of a commercial airline.
The couple filed the defamation action against the defendant for allegedly publishing three defamatory publications on June 4, 2019. The plaintiffs filed the civil action on Nov 7, the same year.
The publications allegedly consisted of two WhatsApp picture messages and a WhatsApp voice message, accusing the couple of having cheated many businesspersons, among other claims.
The High Court had awarded Selvakumar and Indrani RM50,000 and RM100,000 in damages, respectively, and also ordered Gobalakrishnan to pay RM40,000 in costs to the two plaintiffs.
The couple are represented by counsel from the law firm, Zaid Ibrahim Suflan TH Liew & Partners. - Mkini
