KUALA LUMPUR: Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has wished Selangor Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Azmin Ali the best of luck in taking over Selangor in the upcoming state polls.
Azmin had yesterday declared that he was confident PN could win 33 of the 56 seats in the Selangor state assembly.
In a veiled jab at the former Selangor menteri besar, Zahid today said Azmin had been equally confident of retaining his Gombak parliamentary seat in the 15th general election (GE15).
“(So) of course for the Selangor state elections, he would also have a high level of confidence,” Zahid told reporters after an Aidilfitri open house in Kampung Baru here.
“I wish him all the best!”
In GE15, Azmin, a three-term MP for Gombak, was ousted by Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari.
Amirudin, who is also the Selangor PKR chief, used to be closely linked to Azmin prior to his departure from PKR.
Speaking to the media at an Aidilfitri open house yesterday, Azmin noted that PN won six parliamentary seats in Selangor during GE15.
He said PN lost nine other seats by fewer than 5,000 votes, adding that the coalition “only needs 1,000 to 2,000 votes” more to win each seat in the upcoming state polls.
“Given the current situation, we are confident that these (33) seats can be taken by PN,” the Bukit Antarabangsa assemblyman said.
Azmin, who quit PKR in February 2020, played a prominent role in the Sheraton Move that resulted in the collapse of the former Pakatan Harapan government that saw PN take over the reins of government. - FMT
