Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said cloud seeding will be carried out to increase water level at seven dams, according to Bernama.
The catchment areas involved are Sungai Muda and Sungai Kedah, Sungai Melaka, Sungai Kelantan, Sungai Klang, Sungai Bernam and Sungai Similajau.
“The Armed Forces and MetMalaysia (Malaysian Meteorological Department) will work together to execute the exercise.
“This will be done soon so that the people whose water sources come from these dams will not have to suffer from water shortages,” he was quoted as saying by The Star.
He added that the government wants to conduct cloud seeding now although the water level has not reached critical levels.
Zahid, who was speaking to reporters after chairing the National Disaster Committee meeting, on Tuesday (May 16), said there are no immediate plans to declare an emergency over the current hot spell.
“We have put in place proactive and preventive measures to face the heatwave.
“For now, we don’t think there is a need for an emergency to be declared. But if need be, we will issue Directive 20 of the National Security Council for an emergency to be called,” he added.
In a related development, MetMalaysia issued a Level 1 heatwave warning for eight districts.
According to its website, the eight areas are Padang Terap in Kedah; Pasir Mas and Kuala Krai in Kelantan; Pekan, Bera and Rompin in Pahang and Segamat and Muar in Johor.
