PETALING JAYA: An Umno leader has taken a swipe at PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang for saying PAS is not a “halfway house” that can be used by others to further their political interest.
Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi said PAS’ history showed that it often rode on other parties’ coattails for its own interests.
Puad also claimed that PAS was willing to sacrifice key principles of its struggle for the sake of sharing power in government.
“PAS has a bad record when it comes to making friends in politics,” he told FMT, adding that PAS could part ways with its political allies at any time, just as it did with Umno and DAP previously.
“It’s not that there are parties that want to make use of PAS, but PAS is looking for opportunities to ride on others. That’s why PAS made friends with DAP and Umno in the past.”
Puad added that it would not be shocking if PAS were to ditch Bersatu and befriend DAP again to be a part of the unity government.
PAS, DAP and PKR used to be part of Pakatan Rakyat and contested together in the 2013 general election before the coalition broke up in 2015.
Meanwhile, Umno and PAS formed the Muafakat Nasional in 2019, in the aftermath of the 14th general election. However, this pact became effectively inoperable after Umno accused PAS of betraying the agreement by deciding to work with Bersatu instead.
Earlier today, Hadi said PAS was willing to work with others but would not hesitate to pull out if the cooperation went against its principles and strategies.
The Marang MP maintained that PAS was not a political “halfway house” or a pushover, and would not be used by others for the sake of position, power or riches. - FMT
