Installation of first ECRL track to start at year-end

KUANTAN: The installation of the first track of the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project is scheduled to start at the end of this year, involving the 90km route from Gebeng here to Dungun, Terengganu.

Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd (MRL) regional construction manager (Pahang) Khairi Khalid Abdul Rahman said the installation is expected to be completed in three to four months before it continues from Gebeng to Maran.

“We hope to lay 1.5km of track per day for the Gebeng-Dungun route. The installation work starts in Gebeng because the equipment, including track laying machines from China, are coming here in line with the project planning.

“All these equipment will arrive at the Kuantan Port between October and November, to enable the installation to begin in Pahang,” he said when met at an Aidilfitri open house.

Out of the total 665km ECRL line, Khairi said 231km of the tracks are located in Pahang, involving about 152km of level track with the rest laid over bridges and through tunnels.

The rail network, which includes 59 tunnels, is estimated to cost RM50.27 billion and will traverse Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and Selangor.

As for the work on bridges, Khairi said the installation of viaduct beams was progressing well with about 5km of the bridge route in Pahang completed so far.

“There are two beam installation machines called beam launchers in Kuantan for Sungai Kuantan and in Temerloh for work on Sungai Pahang. We expect the bridge to be completed by the end of this year or early 2024,” he said.

As for the Genting Twin Tunnel, which will be the longest rail tunnel in Southeast Asia when completed, Khairi said excavation work at the Titiwangsa Range had reached more than 2.5km for each tunnel so far.

The tunnel excavation uses a tunnel boring machine as opposed to drilling and blasting methods used at other tunnels. It started last June and is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2025. - FMT
