Johari: Actions to recover assets linked to 1MDB underway

Steps are being taken to reclaim assets associated with the 1MDB scandal, including those from Goldman Sachs, said 1MDB task force chairperson Johari Abdul Ghani.

The Titiwangsa MP explained that the task force's main priority is to retrieve assets, while the responsibility of handling criminal cases and arrests will fall under the jurisdiction of the appropriate authorities.

“My focus is only on assets recovery. We are working on many more (assets recovery), especially with Goldman Sachs," he told reporters during the Federal Territory Hari Raya Aidilfitri at Dataran Pintu Gerbang in Kampung Baru, Kuala Lumpur today.

Johari (above) was answering a question on whether additional individuals connected to the 1MDB scandal would be extradited to Malaysia to face legal consequences.

On May 3, an alleged associate of fugitive businessperson Low Taek Jho (Jho Low) returned to Malaysia after leaving the country five years ago to assist in MACC’s probe.

According to a source, the fugitive was brought back with the help of overseas enforcement agencies and the graft buster as part of an investigation into the individual's alleged receipt of embezzled funds from 1MDB and SRC International Sdn Bhd.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim appointed Johari to lead the task force on March 10 as the former second finance minister had raised many 1MDB issues including the settlement between Goldman Sachs and the government.

According to Johari, the previous administration had consented to receive only RM11.2 billion out of the claimed RM29 billion. Additionally, the bank had committed to aiding the recovery of another RM6.25 billion in assets.

Johari had said that the settlement was grossly insufficient and urged the government to probe those involved. - Mkini
