Malaysia has ranked 73 on Reporters Without Borders' (RSF) 2023 World Press Freedom Rankings, up from 113 last year.
This is the highest rank ever attained by Malaysia, placing the country in the same company as Hungary (72) and Sierra Leone (74).
The previous record was set in 2020 when Malaysia was ranked 101 out of 180 countries.
Malaysia has topped the rankings among the Asean countries two years in a row.
Rankings for the other Asean countries are as follows: Thailand (106), Indonesia (108), Singapore (129), Philippines (132), Brunei (142), Cambodia (147), Vietnam (178), Laos (160), and Myanmar (173).
Notably, Timor-Leste, which is pending entry into Asean, ranked 10 - even better than New Zealand (13) and Australia (27).
The rankings were revealed ahead of the official launch at 9pm Malaysian time by US secretary of state Anthony Blinken.
RSF is an international organisation based in Paris which provides safety resources to journalists and conducts research on the state of press freedom around the world.
The 2023 World Press Freedom Index will be officially launched on May 3 in conjunction with the United Nations recognised World Press Freedom Day. - Mkini
