Nanny remanded four days in Johor for allegedly abusing two babies

JOHOR BARU: A 21-year-old woman has been remanded for four days to help with investigations for allegedly abusing two babies at a childcare centre in Taman Mutiara Rini, Iskandar Puteri.

The woman, who worked as a babysitter at the centre, arrived at the court in orange lockup attire at around 9am Tuesday (May 16).

The remand order was granted by Magistrate R. Salini at the Johor Baru Magistrate's Court here.

The remand will be from May 16 until 19 to help with investigations under Section 31(1)(A) of the Child Act 2001, which carries a maximum jail sentence of 10 years or a fine of up to RM20,000, or both, upon conviction.

Earlier, Johor police chief Comm Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat said that the woman was arrested in Bandar Selesa Jaya, Skudai, at around 2am on Tuesday.

He also said the childcare centre was also operating without a licence.

“Her actions towards an 11-month-old baby girl and a nine-month-old baby boy were recorded in two video clips spanning 48 seconds and 39 seconds, respectively.

“The videos went viral on social media, which led the police to investigate the matter on Monday (May 15),” he said in a statement.

In one of the videos, a woman believed to be the suspect was seen screaming, spitting, and hitting a crying infant.

In another clip, she was seen handling the infant roughly as the baby cried loudly.

Comm Kamarul Zaman added that those with information related to the incident to get in touch with the police at the state police hotline 07-221 2999. - Star
