No DAP or Umno logo on ballot, says Ahmad Maslan

Umno supreme council member Ahmad Maslan has urged all parties to stop the polemics surrounding his statement calling on Umno members to support DAP candidates contesting in the state elections.

He explained that his remarks were meant to encourage Umno members to choose candidates from the ruling coalitions, and not only from DAP.

“When we are in one team, we have to help each other. There is no DAP or Umno logo on the ballot paper.

“Instead, there will only be a logo of the coalition, that is Pakatan Harapan or BN and our opponent is Perikatan Nasional (PN). That is clear.

“What is there to worry about? There is no need to have such intense polemics around my statement,” he said as reported by PKR mouthpiece Suara TV today.

Ahmad (above) last week reportedly urged Umno supporters to vote for DAP candidates in the upcoming six-state elections.

He said that this is the appropriate thing to do as Umno is now part of the federal government.

His remarks had courted brickbats from various quarters including fellow Umno supreme council member Isham Jalil who warned that support for Umno may be eroded if the leaders keep urging supporters to vote for DAP candidates.

On a separate issue, Ahmad, who is also the deputy finance minister, said he will leave it to Bank Negara to search for solutions to strengthen the ringgit.

The ringgit has been depreciated recently amid uncertainty over the US debt ceiling issue.

“I leave it to Bank Negara’s wisdom and good judgment as they are the experts and have better knowledge to handle such matters,” he said as reported by The Star.

At the same time, he said the weakening ringgit does provide some advantages.

“This includes pushing the export and tourism sectors, particularly encouraging the arrival of foreign tourists.

“However, there are concerns that the import sector will be affected and (goods becoming) more expensive.

“This may also cause inflation and burden our students who are pursuing education overseas,” he said. - Mkini
