Not 'unusual' for Muhyiddin to rally support for DAP - Sheikh Umar

A Johor DAP leader has reminded Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin of how he had - at the time as a Pakatan Harapan partner - urged voters to support the DAP in the 2018 general elections.

Johor DAP vice-chairperson Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali (above) said while Muhyiddin had said it was "unusual" for an Umno leader to ask party members to support DAP in the upcoming state elections, the Perikatan Nasional chairperson himself had made a similar call in the past.

"Even though Muhyiddin felt it was 'a bit unusual' when an Umno leader urged his members to support DAP, it is actually not something unusual for him.

"This is because he (Muhyiddin) himself once campaigned for DAP," said Sheikh Umar in a statement today.

"At that time, he (Muhyiddin) was very confident. After being sacked from Umno, Bersatu and Harapan formed an alliance.

"As a result, Harapan won (Putrajaya) in the 14th general elections," said the former Paloh assemblyperson.

Specifically, he quoted Muhyiddin's speech on Jan 16, 2018, in Kuala Lumpur: "Bersatu's principle, whoever contests on a Harapan ticket, be it DAP, Amanah or PKR, we will support them 100 percent".

Bersatu’s alliance with Harapan ended after 22 months in Putrajaya, after Muhyiddin was appointed as prime minister following the Sheraton Move which saw defections from both Bersatu and several PKR MPs.

Further, Sheikh Umar pointed out that this time, a total of 19 political parties have agreed to realise the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's decree for a post-GE15 unity government.

"Therefore, the call to strengthen the government is important to ensure political stability and Malaysia's economic recovery," he said, adding this includes in facing the upcoming six state elections.

Yesterday, Muhyiddin said the request by Umno supreme council member Ahmad Maslan for party members to support DAP candidates went against Umno’s principles.

The Pagoh MP added that it should be up to the members whether to respond to the call or not.

Ahmad previously said since Umno was already part of the coalition government, its members must abide by party discipline, including following any orders ahead of the state elections. - Mkini
