MACC to summon ex-minister, Tan Sri again over RM2.3b

The MACC is expected to summon a former senior minister and a former prominent businessperson for another round of questioning about the alleged misappropriation of over RM2.3 billion in public funds.

According to a news report, the anti-graft agency has seized a number of documents regarding the takeover of shares involving a public-listed company, which allegedly caused the decline of Malaysia’s economy in the 1990s.

“The two public figures, including the businessperson who holds the Tan Sri title, may be called again soon.

“Besides the two, MACC has also summoned several individuals, including a lawyer, auditor, and representatives of a company to acquire more documents that are needed for the investigation,” Utusan Malaysia reported, quoting a source.

The seized documents purportedly include banking papers as well as documents from the Securities Commission and developers.

Another business tycoon has also been asked to appear before investigators tomorrow for questioning, read the report.

MACC chief Azam Baki (above) reportedly confirmed the matter and said the case is being investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act for abuse of power to get gratification and under the country’s anti-money laundering law.

Two days ago, Bernama reported that MACC is investigating a former senior minister and prominent businessperson with a Tan Sri title for the alleged misappropriation.

Quoting a source, the government news agency said the investigation is an extension of the Pandora Papers - a leak of financial documents by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) regarding offshore service providers that set up and manage shell companies and trusts in tax havens around the globe.

The investigation is focused on the sale of shares of the listed company, the ownership of valuable assets by the businessperson, and the former senior minister and family members who are estimated to be worth billions of ringgit, both in the country and abroad. - Mkini
