Philippine cops rescue 17 Malaysian victims from job site

The Philippine National Police (PNP) rescued 17 Malaysian nationals who had reportedly complained of poor working conditions at their job site in Kawit, Cavite County, which is located some 25km from Manila.

In a statement on social media, the PNP said the Malaysians were rescued in a joint operation with the Royal Malaysia Police on Klaire One Corp, which describes itself as a property company on its Facebook page.

PNP chief Benjamin Acorda Jr (above) said the rescued Malaysian workers sought assistance from authorities due to their poor working conditions at the job site and have expressed the desire to resign from the said company.

"We will continue to work closely with our foreign counterparts to ensure the safety and wellbeing of everyone within our borders," he added.

According to the PNP, the 17 Malaysians were turned over to police attache Norazman Hassan Basari on Saturday morning.

Malaysiakini has reached out to Bukit Aman for further comments on the matter.

The PNP did not say whether the rescued workers had permits to work in the Philippines or how they ended up at Klaire One Corp.

"The PNP's successful joint operation with the Royal Malaysia Police is a testament to the importance of cross-border cooperation in addressing issues related to human rights and the protection of vulnerable individuals," said Acorda.
