PM confirms Lynas given 6-month extension with 'strict terms'

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has confirmed that the government has given Lynas Malaysia a six-month extension to meet licensing conditions to operate in the country.

Its main condition is to ensure that Lynas’ rare earth plant in Pahang is effectively radiation-free.

Anwar said the extension will come with strict conditions and will be strictly observed.

“The (related) minister will give the details (soon) but from our understanding, the extension is contingent upon conditions strictly observed,” he told a press conference after a coalition government parties meeting in Kuala Lumpur tonight.

Science, Technology, and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang will be issuing a detailed statement on the matter tomorrow.

In February, the Atomic Energy Licensing Board (AELB) agreed to renew Lynas' operating licence effective from March 3 for a period of three years.

However, this was subject to strict conditions.

One of these conditions was to relocate the cracking and leaching facility at Gebeng, Kuantan - which produces radioactive Water Leach Purification (WLP) residue - out of Malaysia before July.

The other conditions that Lynas must comply with include beginning the process of developing a permanent disposal facility, submitting a work development plan and reporting its status, ensuring their cracking and leaching plant outside Malaysia is in operation by July and maintaining a financial deposit for compliance.

Lynas had applied to remove the conditions, and an appeal on this was heard on April 28. - Mkini
