PETALING JAYA: A police report has been lodged against a DAP city councillor for claiming that the authorities deliberately refused to grant a Hindu temple in Seberang Perai, Penang, approval for a chariot procession.
Seberang Perai Selatan police chief Lee Chong Chern said he lodged a report against Seberang Perai city councillor David Marshel over alleged defamatory statements posted on Marshel’s Facebook.
In a Facebook post yesterday, Marshel had claimed that Lee refused to grant the temple approval for a chariot procession set to be held on June 2, and that Lee was undermining the unity government by “sowing hatred among Hindu devotees” towards the administration.
Lee said he had a meeting with the temple committee yesterday and its application was approved with certain restrictions and conditions.
“The temple committee was told that they must be responsible for the prayers and procession. They agreed and said they would comply,” he told FMT.
He said an investigation paper has been opened, and the case will be investigated under section 500 of the Penal Code for defamation, and section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act for online content that is obscene, indecent, false, menacing or offensive in character with intent to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass another person.
The case will also be referred to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.
Meanwhile, Marshel said he was ready to be investigated and will cooperate with the authorities.
In a statement, he also said he will be lodging a report against Lee, and hoped the police will act accordingly. - FMT
