PETALING JAYA: Kedah menteri besar Sanusi Nor has apologised to Mahfuz Omar over a defamatory Facebook post which linked the former Pokok Sena MP to the opening of a Sports Toto outlet.
In a Facebook post today, Sanusi said he had been ordered to issue an apology to Mahfuz as per the ruling by the High Court on Nov 8, 2021, and the Court of Appeal on April 3 this year.
“I hereby apologise to Mahfuz over statements made in the Facebook post,” he said.
Sanusi had been slapped with the lawsuit in 2019 over a post linking Mahfuz, then the MP for Pokok Sena, to the opening of a Sports Toto outlet in the area.
The High Court had upheld the suit and ordered him to pay RM50,000 in damages.
Sanusi then appealed to the Court of Appeal, which dismissed his application and increased the damages from RM50,000 to RM120,000.
On May 4, Mahfuz threatened to file a bankruptcy notice against Sanusi if he failed to pay the damages awarded in the defamation suit.
Mahfuz said if Sanusi continued to drag his feet in paying the RM120,000 in damages and RM10,000 in legal costs, he would consult his lawyers on the next course of action, Berita Harian reported. - FMT
