PETALING JAYA: The government will act against instant messaging platform Telegram if it continues to ignore the communications and digital ministry’s request for a meeting on user security, says Fahmi Fadzil.

He said his ministry has reached out to the company several times for a meeting since January but the firm has been uncooperative, Bernama reported.

“We admit we have a problem with Telegram. Despite being invited several times to meet with us since January, they’ve refused to cooperate.

“I have asked the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to study the appropriate action to be taken,” Fahmi was quoted as saying at a press conference after launching the logo and theme of the 2023 National Day and Malaysia Day at the Esplanade, KLCC Park, here.

He said the ministry received various complaints about the services provided on the platform regarding public safety, sales of prohibited substances, scammers, and pornography.

He said a meeting between the government and Telegram was important to ensure that the best solution is found immediately.

“I will leave it to MCMC, as the responsible regulatory body, to recommend the action to be taken,” he said.

Fahmi added that other social media platforms such as TikTok, Facebook and Twitter have no issues cooperating with the ministry. - FMT
