Zahid: Selangor seat allocation shouldn't only rely on GE results

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said seat distribution in Selangor for the upcoming state polls will take into account seats that BN and Pakatan Harapan won respectively.

However, he said that should not be the only consideration.

“We feel that the premise of GE13 and GE14 alone cannot be used as a basis for us to prioritise seats,” he told reporters at a Federal Territory Hari Raya Aidilfitri event at Dataran Pintu Gerbang in Kampung Baru, Kuala Lumpur today.

The deputy prime minister said he was informed that Selangor Umno liaison committee chairperson Megat Zulkairnain Omardin and Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari are discussing the matter and that nothing has been finalised yet

In the 2013 polls, BN won 12 of the 56 state seats in Selangor while Harapan’s precursor - Pakatan Rakyat - dominated and won 44 seats.

Later, during GE14, Harapan expanded their control of Selangor winning 51 seats, while BN won 4.

Six of Harapan’s seats were won by Bersatu - then a member of the coalition - while PAS, as a third force coalition won one seat.

PAS and Bersatu are now allies in Perikatan Nasional, while BN and Harapan are partnering up after forming the federal government together.

On May 2 this year, Umno proposed that it be allocated 22 seats in the upcoming Selangor legislative assembly election as part of a Harapan-BN election pact.

Selangor Umno Youth chief Mohd Imran Tamrin revealed that the party’s proposal was to field one state assembly candidate in all 22 parliamentary seats in the state.

Imran said this formula included Umno being allowed to defend all five seats it currently holds and the right to field candidates for seats where the incumbent had defected - Batang KaliJeramSelat KlangDengkilGombak Setia, and Bukit Antarabangsa.

He mentioned that Selangor Umno has not received any feedback on the proposal from the party’s committee that is currently negotiating the pact. - Mkini
