PM's aide: Foundation funds not used for Jaguar on loan to Anwar

Yayasan Aman did not spend any money on the Jaguar XJ that was once used by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Anwar's political secretary Ahmad Farhan Fauzi said the 13-year-old vehicle was donated to the foundation by a reformasi sympathiser in 2020.

Following which, the vehicle was used by Anwar until he became prime minister. During that period, Anwar paid for the insurance, road tax, and maintenance of the vehicle with his own money.

"No funds from Yayasan Aman were used on that vehicle," said Farhan.

Yayasan Aman is a foundation for the poor set up by Anwar in 1983 - the year he was appointed youth and sports minister and a year after he entered Parliament.

Farhan (above) explained that the BMW 7 Series previously used by Anwar was loaned to the latter by a bumiputera businessperson to be used during the November 2022 election campaign.

"The vehicle was returned as soon as Anwar was issued a government car," said Farhan.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim

Yesterday, Farhan lodged a police report against Bersatu member Badrul Hisham Shaharin, former Bersatu information chief Wan Saiful Wan Jan, and blogger Raggie Jessy Rithaudeen over allegations concerning Anwar's home, vehicles, and property.

Badrul Hisham had made the allegations in a report to the MACC, urging the graft busters to probe Anwar for residing in a home belonging to a tauke cina and use of vehicles that do not belong to him.

According to Anwar's lawyer Sankara Nair, Anwar signed a 10-year lease for the bungalow in Kajang, Selangor, in 2020, and thus the deal was above board.

In his police report, Farhan urged the police to use Section 500 of the Penal Code against the trio for committing criminal defamation.

This police report received criticism from Bersatu legal and constitution bureau deputy chief Sasha Lyna Abdul Latif, who argued that Anwar should use the civil courts instead of criminal courts to avoid the perception that he was abusing the police for political purposes.

Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Karim

Meanwhile, Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Karim said he was "saddened" that Anwar's aide had attempted to initiate investigations under Section 500 of the Penal Code.

"I was charged in the Johor Bahru courts under the same law for criticising the Federal Court's decision to jail Anwar for five years.

"I am saddened that the same law is being used against critics of the prime minister," he said in a statement. - Mkini
