PETALING JAYA: Hulu Selangor Bersatu has submitted its “final demand” to the party’s central leadership over the candidate for the Batang Kali seat, mere hours before Perikatan Nasional is set to unveil its candidates for Selangor.
The Bersatu division wants its deputy chief, Khairul Azhari Saut, to contest the seat, amid speculation that a former member of the division’s leadership will contest instead.
Hulu Selangor Bersatu chief Anuar Nor said the division unanimously backed Khairul to be nominated as the candidate. He described Khairul as a “veteran” in the party and a hard worker.
“He also has a good relationship with our friends in the PN component parties and non-Malay voters, which would give him an edge if he’s nominated as a candidate.
“I hope the top leadership will listen and consider the views of Hulu Selangor Bersatu,” he said in a statement.
Yesterday, Anuar claimed the division had been sidelined by the party’s top leadership in the selection of PN’s Batang Kali candidate and that two senior Bersatu leaders were the ones who chose the candidate.
He said this had angered Hulu Selangor Bersatu members, causing some of them to threaten to boycott the state election. Some have even uploaded photos of themselves burning and stepping on the PN flag on social media.
Bersatu’s Harumaini Omar won the Batang Kali seat in the 14th general election. However, he left the party following the Sheraton Move to join Pejuang.
Pejuang has opted to stay out of the Aug 12 state elections.
It is understood that Muhaimin Harith will be fielded by PN in Batang Kali. He had been sacked as a committee member of Hulu Selangor Bersatu on July 21, according to Anuar. - FMT
