Former Selangor menteri besar Azmin Ali reminded his successor Amirudin Shari not to be too arrogant about defeating him in the Gombak parliamentary seat in the last general election.
Azmin said his defeat at the Parliament level does not mean he will lose in the upcoming state polls.
“I lost in Gombak, my friend Amirudin has arrogantly said he toppled me in Gombak.
“Never mind, I am content with my loss in Gombak. Hopefully, this is an opportunity for me to reflect but I want to remind Amirudin Shari that a defeat in one election does not mean we will lose in the next election,” Azmin said.
He was giving a speech at the Pidato Kebangkitan Rakyat Gombak in Taman Samudera, Selangor, last night.
Also present were PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, former Ketereh MP Annuar Musa, former Selangor BN chairperson Noh Omar, Gombak PAS chairperson Salehuddin Nasir, and incumbent Gombak Setia assemblyperson Hilman Idham.
In the 2018 general election, Azmin won the Gombak seat with a 48,721 majority.
However, Azmin – who defected from PKR in 2020 – subsequently lost the seat to his protege Amirudin Shari in the 2022 general election.
While PKR recaptured both Gombak and Ampang in the 15th general election, Perikatan Nasional (PN) recorded better results in Gombak (with 36 percent of the votes) than in Ampang (26 percent of the vote).
‘Musk was playing his phone’
Meanwhile, Azmin, who is also the PN information chief, accused Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim of lying about the Malaysian government’s cooperation with the founder and CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, Elon Musk.
Azmin claimed the agreement with Musk was first made when he was the senior minister of international trade and industry under the previous PN administration.
“Yesterday he announced that he met with Elon Musk, next week he might have a story that Elon Musk wants to come (to Malaysia) and learn from him.
“Look, (the meeting) was only virtual. Even then it was only 25 minutes and in those 25 minutes it was proven that Elon Musk was just playing on his phone (and) does not care what you (Anwar) had to say.
“Meanwhile, I – who is supposedly the traitor and was toppled – Anwar Ibrahim, I went to Elon Musk’s office in Los Angeles, US last year. I have negotiated with SpaceX, the highest management under Elon Musk and we discussed bringing this quality investment to Malaysia.
“I did it earlier than you,” he said.
Previously, Azmin also accused Anwar of lying about the Amazon Web Services (AWS) investment in Malaysia worth RM25.5 billion.
In a similar vein, Azmin also claimed he was the one who was responsible for negotiating the AWS investment back when he was a minister. - Mkini
