PAS vice-president Mohd Amar Abdullah said Dr Mahathir Mohamad's decision to back Perikatan Nasional in the coming state elections would wipe off the former premier's "past mistakes."
"Everyone has a history. Even in the history of Islam, many who embraced the religion came with issues before converting," Amar (above) told reporters after attending the 'Munajat Rakyat' programme in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, last night.
He was commenting on Mahathir's maiden presence on the PAS stage last night.
Mahathir is renowned for having enmity with PAS throughout his career but had recently started working with the Islamic party to champion the Malay cause.
Meanwhile, Mahathir in his speech to thousands of attendees at the Sultan Muhammad IV stadium, urged voters to let PN win the Aug 12 elections in six states.
"I hope we (PN) can make a clean sweep. We are all Malays, and a lot of people are saying the Malays are split and will never unite, but tonight we can see Malay leaders gathered to champion the Malay race and the country's future.
"It is not easy for us to give way to others, because we also have the ability to rule. Once upon a time, Malaysia was called the 'Tiger of Asia', but today, we are known as a 'kakistocracy'," the nonagenarian claimed, referring to the term for a state or society governed by its least suitable or competent citizens.
Also present at the ceramah were PN chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, and state and central PN leaders.
Meanwhile, Amar urged all quarters to accept Mahathir, who he claimed "has changed".
"We accept him because he has changed; we can't do anything about his history.
"We hope with him (Mahathir) working with us, he can fix his past mistakes... we hope so." - Mkini
