KUALA LUMPUR: V Ganabatirau (PH-Klang) has lamented the lack of progress in flood mitigation projects in his constituency, saying this leaves residents “restless” when it rains.
He questioned why only small projects like pump installations and drainage cleaning were being carried out.
“We frequently hear announcements for flood mitigation projects, but progress has been slow.
“When it rains, we have to be prepared and residents are left wondering if they need to relocate, or what preparations they need to make,” he told the Dewan Rakyat.
Ganabatirau urged the irrigation and drainage department (JPS) to closely monitor the flood mitigation projects, including ensuring the size of the projects commensurate with their price tag.
In June, Bernama reported that the natural resources, environment and climate change ministry would immediately implement a flood mitigation plan in Klang as a long-term solution.
Its minister, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, said the plan will start with more frequent maintenance of the drains.
“The long-term solution is implementing flood mitigation plans for the Batu Enam, Kapar Kecil and Kapar Besar rivers,” he said after visiting Pekan Meru and Bandar Bukit Raja, which were hit by flash floods.
Klang, a port city with a high population density, is often hit by floods, with the worst occurrence in December 2021.
According to the statistics department, the December floods in Selangor caused RM1 billion in damage to homes, RM855 million in damage to vehicles, RM855 million in damage to business premises, and RM884.5 million in losses to the manufacturing sector.
Separately, Ganabatirau questioned why the Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (Mitra) task force committee had yet to meet.
“I’ve been made a committee member (of the task force) but it’s been four months without a meeting,” he said, adding his queries on the matter had gone unanswered. - FMT
