DPM hopes weekend rallies will be peaceful

Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi hopes the opposition's rally against the withdrawal of corruption cases against him this coming Saturday will be peaceful.

"We are a democratic country. One party wants to organise a rally, and another wants to hold another rally.

"I hope there won't be clashes on the streets," the Umno president said when met at the Malaysia International Halal Showcase at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre in Kuala Lumpur today.

He was asked for a response on the planned rally by Perikatan Nasional Youth outside the Sogo Complex in Kuala Lumpur, this Saturday afternoon.

According to PN Youth chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari, the Malaysia Day rally is part of a movement called “Gerakan Selamatkan Malaysia” that was launched last Sunday.

Police have summoned Gombak Setia assemblyperson Hilman Idham today over the planned rally.

Fadhli said the PN Youth will meet up with the police today regarding the matter and will consider changing the rally location to Bukit Bintang, in front of Yayasan Selangor, if the street in front of Sogo is too small.

Following the announcement, Sungai Besar Umno division chief Jamal Md Yunos also urged his infamous ‘red shirts’ movement to gather on the streets to counter the PN rally.

According to the controversial figure, the counter-rally is needed to "save Malaysia from PN".

Meanwhile, Zahid also commented on reports that the Parliamentary Special Select Committee (PSSC) on Human Rights, Election, and Institutional Reform will call two attorneys-general to explain the decision to withdraw all 47 charges against him in the Yayasan Akalbudi case.

According to Zahid, he would leave it to the PSSC to "shed light on the issue".

PSSC chairperson William Leong told Parliament yesterday that both attorneys-general will be called to the committee's proceeding to give an explanation on Zahid's case.

“We will table the report after the investigation is done,” Leong said.

Leong did not specify which two attorneys-general will be summoned but the decision in Zahid’s case was delivered a day before former AG Idrus Harun officially retired. Ahmad Terrirudin Mohd Salleh took over the position on Sept 6. - Mkini
