Police have submitted the investigation papers (IPs) on former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang to the Attorney-General’s Chambers for further action.
Media reports quoted Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain saying the papers on Mahathir were submitted on Sept 5 while the IPs on Hadi were submitted this morning.
Razarudin also said Perikatan Nasional chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin’s statement will be recorded on Sept 12 regarding his remarks at a recent ceramah.
He added that the former premier requested for the session, initially scheduled for Sept 11, to be postponed.
Denying that the investigations are politically motivated, Razaruddin (above) said the police will not compromise on matters related to race, religion, and royalty or better known as “3R” cases.
“The notion that the police are following instructions of politicians is not true.
“We have been consistent in taking action against those who touched on 3R matters.
“Even the previous government administration also called for 3R issues not to be touched as it could disrupt public order,” he added.
He noted how Muhyiddin himself and former de facto law minister Takiyuddin Hassan also cautioned against playing up such issues.
“Any government that is in power, we do not want 3R issues being played, causing a mess to the country.
“That is our approach, not that we are being instructed or forced to do so (take action against those who play up the 3R issues),” said the police chief.
3R special task force
Responding to a question, Razarudin said there is no need to beef up the 3R special task force.
“There is no need for it for the time being. The task force, with 32 officers, that we have now is enough... finishing the investigation within seven days.
“Although we may have submitted the IPs to the AGC, it will come back to us with suggestions from the AGC.
“More detailed info might be needed such as forensic data, among others,” he added.
Previously, it was reported that Hadi was investigated under the Sedition Act and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act.
Meanwhile, Mahathir was investigated for allegedly insulting the royal institution. - Mkini
