JOHOR BAHRU: Only two postal votes have been received from Malaysians in Singapore for the Pulai parliamentary and Simpang Jeram state by-elections.
VoteMalaysia volunteer Farrah Diyana Ali said she hoped the number will increase before the deadline tomorrow night.
Farrah, 35, said volunteers set up five collection zones to cover the central, eastern, western, northern and southern areas of the republic, and that Malaysian voters just need to contact the volunteers to set up a meeting to pass their ballots.
“We started collecting on Sept 1 and will end tomorrow night. We are not sure how many Malaysians will cast their ballots but, based on the survey that we have conducted, the number is small,” she said.
She said the volunteers will deliver the ballot papers to Dewan Jubli Intan in Johor Bahru, and plan to leave early to avoid traffic congestion.
The Election Commission said in a statement that 304 postal ballot papers had been issued for the by-elections – 226 for Pulai and 78 for Simpang Jeram.
Polling for the by-elections, which are being held following the July 23 death of Salahuddin Ayub, who held both seats, will take place on Saturday. - FMT
