PSM cries intimidation after police summoned three of its leaders

PSM has criticised the police for summoning three of its leaders who attended an event to hand over a memorandum at Parliament on Tuesday.

According to the party's deputy secretary-general Bawani KS, the three individuals called to give their statements are PSM deputy chairperson S Arutchelvan, honorary treasurer Soh Sook Hwa, and PSM Youth member Ayman Hareez.

Bawani said PSM lawyer Y Kohila received a call from one Inspector Azim from the Dang Wangi police headquarters on Wednesday, the day after the trio accompanied a group of farmers from Perak to plead with Putrajaya to intervene in plans by the state government to turn their farms into a housing and industrial development area.

"This is a violation and an abuse of power by the police. PSM would like to remind the police of Article 10 of the Federal Constitution, which gives every citizen the right to assemble peacefully, as enshrined in the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.

"Action should instead be taken against the police department for stopping and violating the rights of farmers who peacefully attended the event to hand in the memorandum in Parliament," Bawani said in a statement today.

She further noted that Parliament is not an "off-limit" location.

"It is a shame that the right to assemble is still being curtailed under the Madani government. Dozens of cops were placed to stop ordinary people from going to the Parliament.

"In addition, Dang Wangi police chief ACP Noor Delhan Yahaya also said that those who attended the event will be probed under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant in the discharge of public functions.

"This is an act of intimidation by the police and violates the rights of everyone, and a waste of time.

"PSM urges the Madani government to respect Article 10 of the Federal Constitution, and not just preach about reforms without practising." - Mkini
