PETALING JAYA: Two Umno grassroots leaders are hoping the party will field a controversy-free candidate who is fair and will work hard for the rakyat in the Pelangai by-election next month.
Haslina Hashim, a Bentong Wanita Umno committee member, said the candidate nominated to defend the seat for Barisan Nasional must be someone with personality and capability, who can appeal to residents easily.
Apart from being a local leader who is always ready to help the constituents, she wants a candidate who would not create a culture of cronyism.
“We need an assemblyman who will not have cronies. We need someone who will listen to the people’s problems at the grassroots level.
“(The late Johari Harun) was well-loved by the people here,” she told FMT, referring to the Pelangai assemblyman who died in the Aug 17 light plane crash near Bandar Elmina in Shah Alam.
Bentong Umno Youth chief Hafifi Jamaludin called on the party’s leadership to consider fielding municipal councillor Jamaludin Buyong for the seat.
He said Jamaludin, a Bentong Umno committee member, was not scandal-ridden in any way and had also served as the state government’s coordinator for the Ketari and Bilut constituencies, which are under DAP.
“These factors will give Jamaludin an edge to win the seat,” said Hafifi.
During the 15th general election, Pelangai had nearly 16,400 eligible voters. The constituency, which has several Felda settlements and borders Negeri Sembilan, falls under the Bentong parliamentary constituency.
Pahang BN chief Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail had said that six names have been shortlisted for the Oct 7 by-election – Jamaludin, acting Bentong Umno chief Zaini Salleh, Bentong Umno vice-chief Hazraf Ali Hasan, Bentong Wanita Umno vice-chief Fadliyatun Ahmad and former Bentong Umno Youth chiefs Ekmal Hamid Zakaria and Khairuddin Yaakob. - FMT
