PETALING JAYA: The construction of the West Ipoh Span Expressway (WISE) will allow road users, especially lorries, to avoid the hilly Menora tunnel on the North-South Expressway.

The new 60km highway will connect Gopeng with Kuala Kangsar. It will be an alternative route for those travelling from the north to Kuala Lumpur, and vice versa.

The highway is expected to have a gentle gradient, allowing lorries to negotiate it easily. It is also reported to have a dedicated motorcycle lane.

At present, the expressway near Menora tunnel has a steep gradient that sees many lorries suffering brake failure. Many accidents have also occurred as a result.

Bernama reported Malaysian Highway Authority (MHA) chairman Jalaluddin Alias as saying that the highway is now in the final stage of negotiations and talks are expected to be finalised by December at the latest.

“We hope negotiations will go smoothly and construction will run according to plan,” he said during a media conference for a corporate social responsibility programme for MHA in conjunction with the 2023 Malaysia Day at the Al-Mahmuddiah Mosque in Bagan Serai today.

The Perak government had previously expressed hope that the construction of WISE could be expedited in view of the accidents near the Menora tunnel.

Meanwhile, Jalaluddin said RM5.2 billion had been allocated for the construction of the 233km West Coast Expressway, running from Rawang to Changkat Jering.

Only the 35.5km Beruas-Changkat Jering section is still under construction. - FMT
