Planned power outage at Johor CIQ goes haywire

A planned power outage at Johor border facilities has not gone according to plan, resulting in massive delays and queues.

According to a letter from Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) dated Nov 27, power was supposed to be cut from the Johor Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex, the Sultan Iskandar Building, and JB Sentral from 8pm on Dec 5 to 4am on Dec 6 for maintenance works.

However, postings from social media showed that as of 8am, power to the CIQ had not yet been restored.

The outage reportedly resulted in immigration autogates and other facilities not working, causing long lines of people and vehicles trying to get through the border.

In one social media post shared by Johor Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi - who also shared the TNB letter - a question was raised as to why there was no backup electricity.

Onn replied that this was an embarrassing situation.

"What happened is very troublesome to users and embarrassing to the state.

"TNB and the Public Works Department have been ordered to solve this issue immediately," he said on Facebook.

As of writing it is unclear if power has been restored. - Mkini
