KUALA LUMPUR: The government will take action against any mobile network operator (MNO) that imposes additional charges for the use of the 5G network, says communications minister Fahmi Fadzil.
He said the entire infrastructure of the project was borne out of public funds, hence there should not be any additional charge imposed by the telecommunication companies (telcos).
“I have instructed the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to follow up (on the matter) and make sure there are no additional charges (imposed by MNOs) for using 5G,” he told reporters after launching an event here.
However, he did not specify the type of action Putrajaya would take.
Fahmi also recalled a conversation with the CEO of an MNO who told him that they would do away with additional charges as part of their new package for consumers.
On Nov 6, Fahmi promised that the issue of additional charges would be resolved as the MNOs were working on it.
This followed news reports about how certain MNOs have set additional charges for their customers who wish to subscribe to the 5G network. - FMT
