'Non-Malay PM': Malays shouldn't feel threatened - Johor DAP leader

The Malay-Muslim majority group in Malaysia should not feel threatened by the idea of having a non-Malay prime minister, according to Johor DAP leader Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali.

This is because the Federal Constitution has clearly outlined the position of the Malays, Islam, and the rights of all ethnicities in the country, he said in a statement.

Umar stressed the Malays should instead focus on nurturing better leaders for the country's future rather than dwelling on DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang's recent statement about the possibility of one day having a non-Malay prime minister.

“In my opinion, what Lim Kit Siang said was not wrong. It was even in line with our country's constitution.

“Malays and Muslims should not be worried. The constitution has also clearly outlined the matters regarding the position of the Malays, Islam and the need to be fair to all races in our country.

“In my view, the Malays should focus on creating leaders who are honest, fair, with integrity and capable of improving our economy,” he said.

Better leaders needed

According to the former Johor state assembly member, the Malays need better leaders to lead the country.

He also mentioned that having leaders who are only good at talking is pointless and regressive for the Malays and Islam.

“We do not want to have Malay-Muslim leaders who only know how to shout slogans while the country continues to be poor.

“Facing a bad economy and unfairness to the rakyat will only smear the good name of Islam and the Malays," he said.

Quoting famous Islamic scholar Imam al-Ghazali, Umar said a fair government can still perform well even when it is under the leadership of a non-Muslim compared to a tyrannical Muslim leader.

Recently, Lim came under fire from pro-Malay groups and politicians after raising the possibility of a non-Malay being appointed as the prime minister. He has also been summoned by the police over this. - Mkini
