PM: Moderate Samsuri can cool down nation’s political tension

Having PAS vice-president Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar in Parliament can help cool down the nation’s political tensions, said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Speaking to reporters in Putrajaya today, Anwar said that the Terengganu menteri besar is a moderate politician compared to other PAS leaders.

"I congratulate Samsuri for his victory and wish him all the best in carrying out his new duties," he said when asked to comment on Saturday's Kemaman by-election result.

"In terms of benefit for the country, Samsuri can bring some relief to his group because of his image as someone moderate compared to other PAS leaders who are seen to be extreme.

"Hopefully (by having him), it can cool down the country's political tension," the Tambun MP said.

The by-election recently saw Samsuri retaining the Kemaman parliamentary seat for PAS after he defeated BN's Raja Mohamed Affandi Raja Mohamed Noor.

It was understood that Anwar took a swipe at several PAS leaders in the Parliament who have shown hostility against his administration, including those who drummed up claims that Perikatan Nasional is going to seize power.

‘Umno to meet grassroots’

On BN's defeat in the polls, Anwar said it seemed that many Umno supporters were still not coming out to vote for the party.

This, he added, should be addressed by ramping up campaigns to explain to their supporters.

"We had a meeting yesterday between Pakatan Harapan and Umno leaders.

“And I am satisfied with the discussion because they (Umno) will mobilise their machinery to meet their grassroots," Anwar said. - Mkini
