Ed Sheeran concert to proceed, Puspal greenlit: minister

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has assured that the concert by British pop star Ed Sheeran will go on as scheduled.

Speaking at a press conference today, he said the concert has received the green light from the Central Agency for Application for Filming and Performance by Foreign Artistes (Puspal).

His comments come after Penang mufti Wan Salim Mohd Noor urged the government to cancel the concert.

Wan Salim was quoted by Sinar Harian calling for Muslims to boycott the concert as Sheeran is “a known supporter of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community”.

“I appreciate the views of the Penang mufti on this matter,” Fahmi said during the presser held at the Communications Ministry in Putrajaya today.

“However, among the 16 agencies involved in discussions to decide the applications for any foreign artiste performances… are the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) and Home Ministry.

“Thorough screening was conducted by all these agencies, so I request that the existing process be followed.”

As of now, Fahmi stressed there will be no changes to the permit for the concert, which will be held at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium on Feb 24.

“God willing, we will look into the matter if any actions need to be taken.”

Previously, British band Coldplay’s concert also received similar backlash from religious leaders and opposition politicians, labelling them immoral for supporting LGBT. - Mkini
