'Wait for GE16': PAS leader terms it as king's personal view

PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan has described the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar’s call for politicians to wait for the next general election as the monarch’s personal view.

“That is Tuanku’s personal view. But it must follow the Federal Constitution…

“In the Constitution, there is mention that a prime minister can be considered as losing the confidence of the majority (in the Dewan Rakyat) even when Parliament is still sitting,” he told Malaysiakini.

Sultan Ibrahim, in his royal decree during the opening of the Dewan Rakyat’s new session yesterday, told politicians from both sides of the divide that he would not entertain attempts to topple the government.

Takiyuddin said that based on the Constitution, the federal government can be changed “inside or outside” of Parliament.

“In Parliament, it is through a vote of confidence.

“Pakatan Harapan attempted to do it (change the government) outside of Parliament,” he added, referring to Harapan chairperson Anwar Ibrahim’s claim in the past to have sufficient support among lawmakers to form a government.

Political coups

Since the 2018 general election, there have been two political coups and four prime ministers.

The first was the Sheraton Move, which led to the collapse of the Harapan government in 2020 just 22 months after coming to power.

In 2022, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang said he initiated the Sheraton Move because he felt the Harapan coalition was attempting to eradicate the special rights of Malays in wanting to ratify the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (Icerd).

The Marang MP also revealed that he had met with Umno leaders to discuss this and proposed that Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin become the prime minister.

The move also led to the formation of a new political coalition called Perikatan Nasional.

However, squabbling within PN led to Muhyiddin being forced to resign as prime minister after 17 months. This coup saw him being replaced by Umno’s Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

After the 15th general election in 2022, Anwar and Harapan allied with Umno to form the coalition government. - Mkini
