Jakim gives KK Mart stern warning, calls for all to cease 3R provocations

The Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) has given convenience store chain KK Mart a stern warning over the "Allah" socks debacle.

At the same time, the department wants all quarters to cease touching on 3R (race, religion, royalty) issues.

In a statement this evening, Jakim director-general Hakimah Mohd Yusoff said the department had met with KK Mart's founder Chai Kee Kan yesterday over the socks with the word "Allah" written on them being sold at three of his outlets.

"We gave a stern warning so that this does not repeat itself.

"The company also gave an explanation about the matter and about steps they would take to avoid this from happening again.

"(The company) also agreed to review and update the company's standard operating procedures," she said.

Earlier. DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke revealed that he had helped arrange a meeting between Jakim and Chai to explain the matter.

The offending socks were found at three KK Mart outlets in Sunway, Selangor last week.

According to authorities, only five pairs of socks were on the shelves.

KK Mart has terminated its deal with the socks' supplier, who in turn, blamed a company in China for wrongly sending them.

The store had also issued a public apology on the matter, which was also displayed on electronic display boards at all its outlets.

However, there remains a very vocal pushback against the company, with Umno Youth chief Muhammad Akmal Saleh calling for boycotts.

This, in turn, led to pushback from several non-Muslim ministers who urged Akmal to cease provocations.

Meanwhile, Hakimah urged all quarters to leave the matter to the authorities.

"All quarters are advised not to bring up old issues that touch on 3R aspects and leave this matter to the authorities for action," she said. - Mkini
